Adviser to the QPRT

If the qualified person responsible for training (QPRT) is not an ICAEW member, then the QPRT is required to nominate an ICAEW member to act as an adviser, also known as adviser to the QPRT.

The role of the adviser is to support the QPRT, rather than directly support the students within the organisation.

The QPRT can nominate their own adviser or select one from a list we can provide.

Who can be an Adviser to the QPRT?

An adviser to the QPRT must be:

  • a current member of ICAEW with a clean disciplinary record; AND
  • compliant with ICAEW CPD requirements.

If you are unable to nominate an ICAEW member, a QPRT adviser will be appointed upon your visit by one of our Training Managers.

Key responsibilities

  • The role of the adviser is based on the fact that they have personally gone through the training process to become an ICAEW member and therefore can act as an informal mentor or sounding board for the QPRT on the realities of qualifying as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant, based upon their own experiences.
  • The adviser can perform their role remotely, via email and/or telephone, or occasional face-to-face meetings, if practical. There is no obligation for the adviser to meet in person with the QPRT, although this clearly could happen if desired and convenient to both parties.
  • The adviser will not be paid for their role. Their role is predominantly as a source of informal support and guidance to the QPRT.

Day-to-day responsibilities

An adviser to the QPRT cannot:

  • view the students' online training file which includes the training agreement history, exam and education history, credit for prior learning awarded and exam applications;
  • conduct six-monthly reviews;
  • update or cancel a training agreement; or
  • carry out the final sign-off at the end of the training agreement.
