  • Alternative option to the ICAEW Level 7 apprenticeship

The Level 4 apprenticeship is a great alternative to the Level 7, as this route remains eligible for government funding with no age restrictions. Upon completion, apprentices can move on to complete the full ACA.

  • Funding for 50% of ACA exams

The Level 4 apprenticeship on-programme assessment includes the six ACA Certificate Level exams, and the end-point assessment provides an equivalent for the ACA Professional Level Fundamental Case Study exam. This means that the Level 4 apprenticeship provides funding for seven out of the 14 ACA exams.

  • A stepping stone to chartered accountancy

The Level 4 apprenticeship can serve as a stepping stone to the ACA, allowing you to decide whether the ACA is right for your employees.

Structure of the Level 4 apprenticeship

The Level 4 apprenticeship combines work experience with the Certificate Level ACA exams. It consists of an on-programme assessment and end-point assessment which develops the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) your employees need to qualify as Level 4 Accounting Technician Apprentices. Upon completion of the Level 4 apprenticeship, trainees will have completed the first six ACA exams and receive an equivalent to the Fundamental Case Study exam, setting your employees on their way towards becoming fully qualified chartered accountants by completing the remaining elements of the ACA qualification.

On-programme assessment

During the on-programme assessment, apprentices will:

  • complete the six ACA Certificate Level exams;
  • record their progress in an online training file; and
  • spend at least six hours per week on off-the-job training.

The six Certificate Level exams include:

  • Accounting Fundamentals

Ensures that students have a sound understanding of the techniques of double entry accounting and can apply its principles in recording transactions, straightforward adjustments to financial records and preparing non-complex financial statements.

  • Assurance and Risk Fundamentals

Ensures that students understand the assurance process and fundamental principles of ethics, and are able to contribute to the assessment of internal controls and gathering of evidence on assurance work.

  • Business Insight and Performance

Enables students to prepare essential financial information for the management of a business.

  • Business Law

Provides students with an understanding of the principles of business law.

  • Sustainability and Ethics

Provides students with an understanding of the fundamentals of sustainability and ethics and how they are relevant to the work of the professional accountant.

  • Tax Fundamentals

Enables students to understand the general objectives of taxation and to calculate income tax, national insurance contributions, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, corporation tax, VAT and stamp taxes in straightforward scenarios.

End-point assessment

The end-point assessment comprises two assessments to show competence in the knowledge, skills and behaviours required of the Level 4 standard. During the end-point assessment, apprentices will complete:

  • Professional Discussion - a two-way conversation with an independent assessor; and
  • Role Scenario exam to assess practical application of knowledge and skills.

Once all elements of the apprenticeship have been successfully completed, the apprentice will qualify as an Accounting Technician and receive an equivalent to the ACA Fundamental Case Study exam.

Entry requirements

There are no set entry requirements for the Level 4 apprenticeship but apprentices must have a Level 2 (GCSE pass) in English and Maths before they can attempt the end-point assessment if under 19.

Duration

The Level 4 apprenticeship must be at least 8 months long. It will typically take 18-24 months to complete.

Study options

You will need to select a tuition provider (otherwise known as training provider) to deliver apprenticeship training to your apprentices. The tuition provider monitors a great part of the apprenticeship process and will help you review your apprentice’s performance and ensure they are adhering to the off-the-job training requirements. They will also be able to help design an apprenticeship programme that suits your business' needs.

Choosing an apprenticeship training provider

Levy paying employers can select a provider from the apprenticeship provider and assessment register (APAR). We recommend that non-levy paying employers discuss their tuition provider options with our team.
