ICAEW's Network of Finance Leaders (NFL) programme is designed for senior finance professionals preparing for Finance Director roles. Jessica Ryman, Finance Business Partner at Create UK, Keyword Studios, explains how they benefited from NFL.
Why did you join the Network of Finance Leaders (NFL) programme?
I wanted to be a better leader for my team and to improve my knowledge and confidence. I was looking to be able to make the next step up in my career but lacked the confidence to do so.
What's the biggest change you've seen in yourself as a leader since taking part?
My confidence, without a doubt. I don’t shy away from having the more challenging conversations.
What impact has NFL had on you, your team, or your organisation?
NFL has given me a new perspective, meeting my cohort and getting to learn from them has been invaluable. Everything I learnt during NFL has made my team much more effective, our communication has improved and our outputs are some of the best in the division as a result (even if I say so myself). For the organisation, it’s improved my skills in a way that has carved out a new role for me, I now get to use my skills more broadly, supporting more colleagues and applying more of what I learnt during NFL to my everyday work.
What would you say to someone considering the NFL programme?
Do it. It’s not only the great workshops where you learn and enhance your skills, but you’ll also get the best support from your cohort. You’ll make connections with like-minded people in the same boat as you. Together you help develop each other and you can go to them for support throughout your career when you need it. Our cohort has met up a few times since finishing the course and it’s great to have that network to turn to.
