Invitation to join ICAEW
If you are successful at the Examination of Experience, we will confirm your Pathways exam result by letter and/or email, and invite you to join ICAEW membership.
Please note that you are not entitled to refer to yourself as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant or use the ACA designation after your name until you have been invited into membership AND paid the required ICAEW admission and membership fee. Any misuse of these terms is treated as a serious offence. Where ICAEW has reason to suspect you have misused these terms, you will be subject to further investigation, be reported to your professional body and have your invitation to join ICAEW withdrawn.
Becoming an ICAEW member
Once you have successfully passed Pathways and been invited to join ICAEW, there are several steps you now need to take so you can become an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.
- Pay your membership and ICAEW admission fees
- Pay your practising certificate fee (PC) where appropriate
Once you have paid your fees you can be admitted to ICAEW membership. We will post your ICAEW membership certificate to you automatically approximately six-eight weeks after your ICAEW admission date.
Please note: Your membership certificate will only be issued in the name you used in your Pathways application.
Delayed membership fees
You have a period of 12 months to join ICAEW as a member from your eligibility date, which for those invited through the Pathways route is the date you receive your exam result. You are not entitled to use the ACA designated letters or refer to yourself as an ICAEW member / ICAEW Chartered Accountant until you have completed the application form and paid your ICAEW admission and membership fees. ICAEW regards the misuse of these terms as a serious offence.
If you apply for membership after this time, you will be required to complete a delayed application process. The delayed application process incurs an additional £100 (+VAT) administration fee and we will request additional information from you.
Delayed membership administration fee
You need to complete the Delayed Membership Administration Fee document (PDF 125KB/1 page) and enclose the £100 (+VAT) fee with your application. Please note that this should be sent to us following the instructions on the form. Send the form separately to us and not as an additional page with the further information required below.
Delayed membership process and requirements
Please arrange and submit the following information to email@example.com:
- your up to date CV / career resumé;
- completed Continuing Professional Development (CPD) records form (Word 72KB/2 pages), submit one sheet per year and include where applicable the relevant courses that you have attended;

- a covering letter detailing why your application is delayed.

** Referees - one of your referees must be a current ICAEW member who has known you for at least the last two years in a professional capacity. Your current employer should be one of your referees. Please ensure that the referees comment on your fitness for ICAEW membership, including whether, to their knowledge, there are any criminal, disciplinary, ethical or any other matters that might affect your application. If your employer cannot comment on your fitness for membership, please arrange for a third reference accordingly from an ICAEW member.
