In this case study you can read an example of how ICAEW's new CPD requirements could apply to an experienced member offering tax advice to an international group.

Meet Tomas

Tomas Lobley joined his firm’s graduate tax programme in 2011. Following qualification, he moved into international tax services where he is currently a tax manager. As well as servicing a portfolio of clients he works in a team advising a listed international group on getting ready for pillar two.

Tomas's CPD requirements

After going through the CPD self-assessment tool Tomas knows he is in CPD practice category 1. This means he is required to undertake a minimum of 40 hours of CPD annually, of which 30 must be verifiable.

Tomas is required to keep CPD records and make them available to ICAEW on request. This is in addition to the requirement on the firm to keep CPD records.

Tomas's CPD activities

Tomas’s firm provides a programme of technical tax training comprising tax and regulatory updates (11 x two hours) together with an in-person two-day event during the year focused on pillar two (12 hours).

In addition, all staff are required to complete the firm’s ethics programme annually (two hours) and undertake professional skills development training based on seniority as well as need (identified as part of each individual’s personal development plan). Tomas completes two skills programmes during the year: enhancing impact and building resilience (12 hours).

The firm’s programme of training totals 40 hours of CPD annually, which Tomas completes. The firm also mandates annual completion by all staff of the internal ethics programme, which meets equivalent learning outcomes to ICAEW's ethics CPD course.
