The Solihull Business Discussion Club is an informal gathering of chartered accountants, in practice, business and retired, where we invite speakers to come and talk to us on matters not directly related to our profession. For over thirty years the Solihull Business Discussion Group has been meeting on the second Thursday of the month October to April.
Anything but accountancy
In the mid 1970s ICAEW and BWMSCA set up a number of local discussion groups to encourage members to get together informally. For some reason Solihull Business Discussion Group is the only one that has survived.
The SBDG is a regular gathering of members of ICAEW who come together socially to hear a variety of speakers and to discuss topical and interesting matters over beer and sandwiches.
Members come from across the West Midlands area, not just Solihull, and the SDBG gives them the opportunity to network with similar thinking friends and colleagues in industry, commerce and the profession, and provides a regular meeting base for our retired and semi-retired colleagues.
The SBDG meets at the Old Silhillians’ clubhouse, Knowle, Solihull, Junction 5 of the M42, on the second Thursday of the autumn and winter months (October – April) at 7 pm.
In the recent past our speakers have been as diverse the Minister of the environment, Chair of the Solihull NHS Trust; we also had an evening with Sir Bernard Zissman and the tale of a Blacksmiths mate in the Royal Navy from Benin to Jutland.
In some cases it is probably the annual dinner combined with a wine tasting that keeps the members coming back. The evening takes the form of a combined four course dinner and wine tasting. Two wines are served with each course, plus a port; all you have to do is to identify the wines. Surprisingly all our well versed, expense account accountants, seem to fail miserably at identification without a price list.
Subjects booked for the 2012/13 season include the music of Shakespeare an insider’s story; a funny thing happened at the registry office, the round-the-world clipper race and the Queen’s jubilee pageant.
So why not come and join us at the Old Sils, Junction 5 of the M42 on the second Thursday of the month October to April, or just e-mail Chris Jacob at chj@chadwick.demon.co.uk to be put on the mailing list.
Solihull Business Discussion Group is the only one that has survived – could this be because we discuss - 'anything but accountancy'? To learn more, or to be placed on the mailing list please e-mail Chris Jacob at chj@chadwick1.co.uk.
