Employers who use limb (b) workers – workers who generally have a more casual employment relationship and work under a contract for service – are preparing for legal changes which extend existing duties regarding personal protective equipment (PPE) to such workers from 6 April 2022.

The new duties require employers to provide suitable PPE to such workers, in addition to other ‘employees’, if they may be exposed to risks to their health or safety at work. Employers must also provide sufficient information, instruction and training on its use.

The Health and Safety Executive has prepared free interim guidance ‘Personal protective equipment (PPE) at work regulations from 6 April 2022’ to help employers identify whether the changes apply to them, and what they need to do to prepare for them.

Operative date

  • 6 April 2022
