Michael Birch is the Contact Member for Hungary and Austria. He is your point of contact for members' enquiries and acts as an ambassador in promoting the ICAEW's brand within Hungary and Austria.

Mr Michael Birch OBE MA FCA
Mike Birch has been based as Assurance partner for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Budapest, Hungary from January 1990, until his retirement in June 2012.
During this period he has served major multinational and local financial institutions, including the National Bank of Hungary, Citibank, Commerzbank, DZ-Bank Frankfurt, K&H Bank, Creditanstalt Securities, Westdeutsche Landesbank, AIG, AXA, Generali, QBE and other major multinational companies in Hungary including Shell and RWE.
He has acted as concurring partner for the National Bank of the Czech Republic and Slovenia, commercial banks in the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania and Slovenia.
He has also accumulated significant due diligence experience, having acted for Unicredito DZ-bank, Westdeutsche Landesbank, Credit Suisse ,South African Breweries, Electrolux, Philip Morris and ABB.
He was the leader of the financial services practice in Hungary 1990-2002, Risk Management partner of the office from 1994 until 2010 Technical leader ('Chief Accountant') for the Central Eastern European firm in 2002-2007. He became a retired partner under contract, as Technical partner in the CEE region and fully retired in June 2012.
As Chief Accountant, Mike was a member of the Global Accounting Consulting Services team in PricewaterhouseCoopers providing leading edge advice to engagement teams on the application and development of IFRS and in November 2006 presented at the World Congress of Accountants in Istanbul on 'IFRS 2005 Can we see the benefits?’
He previously opened offices for Price Waterhouse in Istanbul in 1981 and Dubai in 1976 as well as spending 3 years as a senior manager in Hamburg.
Mike chaired the financial services section of the World Economic Forum in Salzburg in 1997 and 1998. He has spoken at numerous conferences on auditing, accounting and banking matters, and published many professional articles and presented at many conferences (external and internal) on financial services.
He contributed the chapter on Marketing Financial Services in Eastern Europe included in the professional publication 'Services in the Transition Economies', published by Pergamon Press in 1996.
Mike was awarded the OBE by Queen Elizabeth II for his outstanding services to British Industry in 1993. He has been a council member of the British Chamber of Commerce in Hungary for the 12 years until 2002, serving as founding Chairman from 1991 to 1993 and until 2002 as Treasurer.
Since retirement Mike lives partly in Budapest and partly in Vienna. He is bi-lingual in English and German, and speaks fluent French, Hungarian and Turkish.
