Share your experiences of simple assessment
7 September: ICAEW’s Tax Faculty is meeting with HMRC to discuss its power to issue simple assessments on 11 September and is urging members to share their feedback.
In 2016, HMRC was a given a power to issue simple assessments with the objective of removing taxpayers from income tax self assessment. The power is currently used to collect tax in two specific cases:
- State pension - pensioners whose only income is state retirement pension which exceeds their personal allowance.
- Un-codeable PAYE underpayments - taxpayers who are not in self assessment and who have a PAYE underpayment which cannot be collected through a tax code adjustment
Further information on simple assessment is available in TAXguide 09/18.
Feedback from members who have experience of HMRC’s use of this power and any practical issues that have arisen would be very welcome.
