New date for Autumn statement

Article

The next fiscal event has been delayed until 17 November and a new ministerial team has been appointed at the Treasury.

The Chancellor and new Prime Minister have agreed that the next fiscal event – now described as an Autumn Statement – will be delivered to parliament on Thursday 17 November 2022. This is postponed from the previously planned date of Monday 31 October 2022.

The Autumn Statement will contain the government’s “medium-term fiscal plan” for debt to fall as a share of GDP. It will be presented alongside the latest economic forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility.

In a letter from the Chancellor informing the chair of the Treasury Select Committee of the date change, the Chancellor states:

“The plan will involve difficult decisions across tax and spending. It is important that we get these right – including ensuring that we prioritise support for the most vulnerable. Moving the date will allow time for me to work with the Prime Minister and the new Cabinet to finalise these decisions and ensure that we have a plan that is strong, credible and lasting.”

Between 25 and 28 October, there was also a reshuffle of HM Treasury Ministers. On 27 October, Victoria Atkins was appointed as Financial Secretary to the Treasury with responsibility for tax policy and customs.
