Statistics on the UK

Gambling Commission

The Gambling Commission compiles and publishes Gambling Industry Statistics annually. Data covers the betting, bingo, casinos, gaming machines and arcades, lotteries and remote gambling sectors and provides figures for premises, employment, turnover and participation.

Office for National Statistics

The Annual Business Survey (ABS) from the Office for National Statistics collects financial information covering UK production, construction, distribution and service industries. Statistics available include:

  • number of enterprises;
  • total turnover;
  • approximate gross value added at basic prices;
  • total purchases of goods, materials and services;
  • total employment costs;
  • total net capital expenditure;
  • total net capital expenditure – acquisitions;
  • total net capital expenditure – disposals;
  • total stocks and work in progress – value at end of year;
  • total stocks and work in progress – value at beginning of year;
  • total stocks and work in progress – increase during year.

Casino Association of South Africa

The Casino Association of South Africa produces annual surveys with data on:

  • current number of casinos
  • maximum permissible casinos
  • number of tables
  • number of machines
  • casino employees
  • gross casino gaming revenue
  • total state and provincial taxes
  • casino levies paid to government
  • visitors
  • corporate social investment.

National Gambling Board

The National Gambling Board of South Africa compiles annual National Gambling Statistics covering:

  • national turnover
  • turnover by province
  • casinos
  • bingo
  • betting
  • taxes and levies.

Statistics on the Americas

American Gaming Association

The American Gaming Association produces an annual report State of the States: The AGA Survey of Casino Entertainment that gives detailed analysis of the US commercial casino industry and gaming equipment manufacturing sectors. Data includes consumer spending figures, tax revenues, employment and wage levels, top markets and consumer opinion surveys.

Australasian Gaming Council

The Australasian Gaming Council publishes an annual Guide to Australia's Gambling Industries which provides figures for Australia, New Zealand and other countries on:

  • the gambling environment
  • gambling expenditure
  • taxation
  • participation
  • problem gambling
  • the regulatory and policy environment
  • economic and social impact.

Legislation and regulation

UK

The gambling sector and the EU provides guidance from GOV.UK for businesses and organisations in the gambling sector on working with the EU from January 2021.

Gov.uk provides some guidance on the main legislation applicable to gambling duties.

Information is also available from the Gambling Commission on how it regulates the gambling industry. This includes details of legislation and licence conditions and codes of practice.

Oceania

The ACT Gambling and Racing Commission provides summaries and links to legislation in Australia relating to:

  • general gambling
  • bookmakers
  • racing
  • casinos
  • gaming machines
  • interactive gaming
  • lotteries.

Other regions

The Remote Gambling Association, a London & Brussels based trade association, provides publications, press releases and advice on responsible gambling

Employment

UK

The annual Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES), published by the Office for National Statistics, includes total employee and employment estimates for different industries for Great Britain and the UK. Figures are broken down to show full-time/part-time and public/private splits. The dataset Industry – Business Register and Employment Survey (BRES): Table 2 includes statistics for:
