New law: Planning permission for solar panels on larger commercial buildings

Published: 01 Jan 2024

Businesses with large commercial premises, developers and those in the solar panel industry will welcome a government announcement that it plans to extend ‘permitted development rights’ to streamline installation of larger rooftop solar panels on commercial premises.

Since April 2015, most rooftop solar panel installations on commercial premises have not required planning permission, provided the total generation capacity does not exceed one megawatt. The new rules will extend permitted development rights to include rooftop solar panels with a capacity of more than one megawatt.

Operative date

  • To be announced

Recommendation

  • Those with properties that could benefit from the changes should consider carrying out an initial investigation to weigh the installation costs of rooftop solar panels against the ongoing savings, to decide whether to investigate further as the proposals unfold.
