The decision taken last year by The All England Tennis Club (AELTC) to cancel the Wimbledon Championships in response to the coronavirus pandemic marked the first time the tournament had failed to take place since it was forced into a six-year sabbatical by the outbreak of the Second World War.
Then, as remains the case today, the risk of war and the damages done by them were held to be uninsurable, so the custodians of the club were left unable to recoup the lost revenues from the fallow years, nor the costs of repairing the damage done when a bomb hit a corner of one of the spectator stands on Centre Court.
