In the grand scheme of things 27 years might look like a summer road trip in the history of finance. Launched in 1993, that’s how old the first Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) is: the Standard & Poor’s Depositary Receipt (SPDR), which tracks the S&P 500 index.
For decades, State Street Global Advisors’ SPDR ETF – also known as the Spider – was the largest by assets under management, reaching $2 trillion by the end of 2012.
