TAXline News: July 2020

Frank Haskew, Head of the Tax Faculty, reports on recent developments at the Tax Faculty during July 2020.

The past month has again seen an enormous amount of activity as we respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. Much of the time has been taken up by working with HMRC and HM Treasury in the design and delivery of the selfemployment income support scheme (SEISS), which was launched on 13 May 2020. Following a request from HMRC for our support to help test the system, a number of clients of Tax Faculty committee members submitted live data and HMRC was able to make some adjustments in advance of the system going live the following week.

The launch appeared to go well but the biggest disappointment for members was that, unlike the job retention scheme ( JRS), tax agents were not able to make SEISS claims on behalf of their clients.
