What inspired you to become an ICAEW Chartered Accountant?

I think what inspired me to become a chartered accountant was the idea of spending my time helping people, as well as being able to learn new things on a daily basis.

Thinking about specific people or experiences, what helped you to get to where you are today and how?

My parents were and still are a big part of me getting to where I am today. The help and support they provided me with encouraged me to keep going even when things got tough and I am very grateful for the support they have always provided me.

What actions can we all take to become workplace allies and what does this mean to you?

We need to care, listen and look out for each other. I also think educating ourselves more will allow us to understand others better and be a support system in times of need.

One of ICAEW’s strategic themes is ‘strengthening the profession by attracting talent and building diversity’. Why do you think this is important?

This strategic theme is important as diversity can bring a lot of positive change as well as bringing new talent and ideas to the profession.

Make an effort to build new friendships within the profession, as they will be there to support you along your journey

How do you think the profession is becoming more diverse?

The profession is becoming more diverse as diversity is being acknowledged as something that needs improving. I think people are encouraged to learn and ask questions which is a positive step towards diversity inclusion. However, I do believe there is still work to be done across the profession to see significant change.

What would you like to see more of in the future of accountancy?

I would like to continue to see more development and advances in technology, and more progression in student societies and student representation in the accounting profession. I know ICAEW is showing leadership in this area and has a number of initiatives that are designed to increase both opportunity of access to the profession and diversity.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone thinking of joining the profession?

Always work hard and push yourself. Make an effort to build new friendships within the profession, as they will be there to support you along your journey to becoming an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.
