After a training agreement has been signed, your student will need to register with us. Discover guidance for employers on registering new students and students who are already part-way through training.

Registering a new student

Before a student registers with ICAEW, you should ensure that they hold the required qualifications and / or the minimum entry requirements to undertake ACA training.

You should carry out any necessary employment checks before you instruct your student to register. Once complete, your student will need to register online by following the steps on screen.

Students will need your training office number to complete their registration. This number is on your authorisation certificate. If you are unable to locate the number, please contact us

Registering an apprentice

If your student is registering as a Level 4 or Level 7 apprentice, they will also need to provide their unique learning number (ULN) and tuition provider details.

Re-registering a student who is already part-way through training

If a student who is already part-way through a training agreement joins your organisation and wants to continue their training, they will need to re-register.

This is applicable to all students who are still within their initial training agreement period, and who have any of the ethics, professional development or practical work experience requirements outstanding.

Please ensure both you and your student follow the steps below when re-registering.

Before the student leaves their previous employer:

Before you can re-register a student, the student should:

  1. Confirm that their training agreement has been cancelled by their previous employer. A student cannot re-register until their previous training agreement has been cancelled.
  2. Ensure that their practical work experience days (and, where relevant, Audit Qualification days) are fully up to date and signed off before the student leaves their previous employer.

When the student starts with you:

To re-register a student, you will need to:

  1. Ensure both the student and the qualified person responsible for training (QPRT) in your organisation have completed and returned the re-registration form to applications@icaew.com.
  2. Meet with your student to set milestones for the remainder of their training.
  3. Ensure your student has re-evidenced their professional development skills using examples and feedback from you.

To ensure ICAEW Chartered Accountants are prepared for the future, we are updating the ACA qualification. When re-registering a student using the form above, you are asked to select which version of the ACA you would like the student to progress with:

1. Existing ACA prior to 30 June 2025 – this version of the ACA is made up the following elements:

  • 52 professional development skills (where relevant)
  • 450 days of practical work experience
  • Ethics
  • 15 exams

2. Next Generation ACA as of 1 July 2025 – this version of the ACA is made up of the following elements:

  • 25 professional skills (where relevant)
  • 30 units of Specialised Learning
  • 450 days of professional work experience
  • 14 exams

When selecting which version of ACA your students should continue with, consideration should be given to the elements of the ACA they have already completed. If a student is moved from existing ACA to the Next Generation ACA, they will be required to complete all elements of the updated qualification, including the updated professional skills and Specialised Learning requirements. Your dedicated business development manager can provide tailored guidance on the best option to select.

To form an appropriate assessment of the student's ethics understanding before final sign off, we strongly recommend that the QPRT or counsellor has a minimum of three ethics reviews with the student including discussions on the Ethics in Practice scenarios. Ethics reviews should be at least one month apart. It is the student's responsibility to organise them.
