The ICAEW Technology Hub complements ACA training, giving students hands-on experience with the finance technologies shaping the profession. It ensures the ACA produces chartered accountants who are digitally literate, adaptable and future-ready.
The digital revolution in accountancy
Accountancy has always embraced technology. From early counting machines to spreadsheets, cloud software and automated bookkeeping, every innovation has helped accountants focus on higher-value work. Technology has also changed how accountants communicate with clients, manage data and ensure compliance. The profession has moved beyond number-crunching into strategic decision-making.
But challenges remain. Clients expect real-time insights, regulators demand accurate reporting and firms need teams who can navigate complex digital systems securely. Staying ahead requires accountants who are confident with technology and adaptable to innovation.
Looking forward, AI, predictive analytics and automated auditing will transform the profession further. Accountants are at the forefront of these changes, adopting tools that improve efficiency and deepen insights.
How the ACA prepares students for the digital workplace
The ACA integrates technology throughout within exams, Specialised Learning and professional skills. This ensures ACA students develop the practical skills and digital confidence to contribute immediately in the workplace. The ACA remains the gold standard for integrating technology into accountancy training, preparing trainees for a future where digital skills are essential.
Introducing the Technology Hub
Building on this foundation, ICAEW has launched the Technology Hub, a dedicated space where students can explore industry-standard platforms.
Students can gain hands-on experience with tools for:
- Data analytics
- Cloud accounting
- Automation
- Anti-money laundering (AML) compliance
The Hub provides students with the opportunity to develop their digital confidence and gain insights into how technology is shaping modern accountancy. As an optional resource, the Hub complements the other components of the ACA, bridging the gap between study and professional practice so students can qualify with a strong understanding of the technology landscape.
“With access to a wide range of platforms in the Technology Hub, students are able to explore, experiment and broaden their thinking. This hands-on exposure builds their confidence and helps them understand how different technologies work in practice.”
As new platforms are added to the Technology Hub, students can stay up to date with emerging tools and industry innovations. Ian Pay, ICAEW’s Head of Data Analytics and Tech, explains “There’s currently nothing else available that gives students this kind of safe, independent access to such a broad range of platforms. Universities may partner with individual software providers, but that usually means exposure to just one or two tools. In contrast, we’re launching the Hub with six platforms, and we already have plans to add another six to twelve over the next 12 to 18 months. The offering will continue to grow."
Choose the ACA
The ACA, supported by the Technology Hub, develops chartered accountants who are prepared to thrive in a technology-driven profession. For Authorised Training Employers, this means you can train confident and capable professionals with the technical skills, digital literacy and professional judgement required for the modern workplace.
