Introduction
Of the thousands of ICAEW and SIAA (Society of Incorporated Accountants and Auditors - merged with ICAEW in 1957) members and articled clerks who served in World War 2, dozens, possibly hundreds were captured and finished their war in captivity. Some tried to escape, some studied and took examinations and unfortunately some died.
The men listed on this page are heavily weighted towards those who were captured by the Germans or Italians, as we have discovered their names through involvement with the examination scheme run by the Red Cross and St John Ambulance. As the Japanese authorities were not involved in that scheme, we only currently have knowledge of accountants who died in Japanese prison camps.
Two members of ICAS are also mentioned in these pages as they acted as tutors in the camps and their names appear in ICAEW documents at the London Archive.
Although many members and articled clerks attempted to escape, only four actually made it to freedom:

- Abortive attempt to escape from Gavi PG 5 in Sept 1942 by fixing the count of a work party leaving the camp. Alone.
- Jumped from the train Sept 30th 1943 - alone - free til March 4th 1944. Recaptured in 'No Mans Land' Cassino front by Germans.
- With Lt-Col Trendall, Major R.E.L. Tuckey, Major D.H. Nott lay up in secret hide for 10 days in camp VIII-B until found by American forces 25/4/1945.
Sabotage:
During Allied attacks on Casino front Jan-March 1944 I cut such telephone cables as could be found in my are and gathered considerable information on German positions etc. A plan was formed for a parachute drop on vital points with Italian local assistance but all attempts to get information across was frustrated and ended by my final capture.
Collaboration with enemy:
While on Intelligence Staff at PG 21 - Capt. Ian Tennant Scots Guards, Cpt. White Abbott and myself received information of collaboration acts by one South African camp leader + the SBO of the interrogation camp in Rome our joint evidence is necessary for full particulars of this case

Interrogation:
After recapture in Italy ay Parma GHQ, I was asked name, rank etc and whether in my travels I had seen other ex PoWs and in which direction travelling. On not answering last question I was most courtesy told that the interrogator was aware I need not answer this and as declining the interview ended.
Escape attempts:
On the Italian armistice with the rest of PG 49 we left the camp approx. I hour before Germans arrived. I was with Lt. Chamberlain R.A.. and later joined with Capt. Floyer-Acland D.C.L.I. and Lt. Horner D.C.L.I. we moved round the Apennine mountain range. I was recaptured by Fascists (through the agency of a spy) on 10th November 1943 between Bardi and Borgo Tara.

- Angina. Annual occurrence. Admitted to hospital 2/3 times each year.

Escape attempts:
- June 1940. Escaped from line of march in Belgium with another sergeant (name unknown). Re-captured (2 days later) in enemy farm building near Cambrai.
- April 1945. Escaped from line of march on night of 17rth April with Sgt. R.C. Sperrey (Royal Corps of Signals) and Cpl. R. Bradley (Air Troops).
Sabotage: Encouraged men to derail engines whenever the opportunity presented itself

The camps
German camps: A Dalag is a transit camp (Durchgangslager), Luft indicates it being for airmen. Oflag is a camp for officers (Offizierslager), Stalag (Stammlager) is the main camp (usually for enlisted men), Marlag (Marinelager) is a navy camp and Milag (Marineinterniertenlager) held members of the Merchant Navy.

President's Reception
On the 12 June 1945 the President and Vice-president entertained a group of ex-prisoners of war who had been repatriated after the fall of Germany, including many who had sat examinations while in captivity, while others had been tutors and/or exam invigilators. The following were present:
