About us

Northern Society of Chartered Accountants (NorSCA) is a membership body for circa 4,000 ICAEW Chartered Accountants and ACA students who work across business & the finance profession in the North East and Cumbria.

Northern Society started with its inaugural meeting on 31 July 1882 in Newcastle upon Tyne. The Society was established to support and encourage chartered accountants in the north of England to act in the public interest and to enhance their professional knowledge. We have been at the heart of northern business and producing ICAEW Chartered Accountants for over 130 years.

We are one of the 22 ICAEW District Societies in the United Kingdom and we cover one of the largest geographical areas of all district societies with members working in the main urban centres of Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and Carlisle as well across the north of England from Berwick-upon-Tweed at the top of Northumberland down the north east coast to Loftus; and across northern Yorkshire - including Northallerton, Bedale, Richmond, Leyburn, Hawes; to Cumbria – including Brough, Kirkby Stephen and down to Millom and up the coast via St Bees to the Solway Firth and Longtown.

Today our ICAEW members work across the private, public and not-for-profit sectors

How Northern Society supports members

Northern Society is a member organisation and we aim to both support our ICAEW Chartered Accountant members and ACA students in the north east and Cumbria as well as supporting ICAEW national initiatives. We also aim to represent the views of members in the north east and Cumbria to ICAEW in London.

Northern Society Office Holders and General Committee

Northern Society is led by a President and supported by a Deputy President, Vice President, Honorary Treasurer, Honorary Secretary and other members of the General Committee.

The Office Holders and members of the General Committee are ICAEW members who undertake their role in a voluntary capacity to support their membership body. They receive no remuneration for the time that they contribute to NorSCA.

NCASS (Northern Chartered Accountant Students’ Society) is the official body that represents ACA students under ICAEW training contracts in the Northern Society area in the North East of England and Cumbria. We have been supporting student chartered accountants across northern England since 1896.

Today NCASS provides support and organises events across the North East and Teesside.

In Cumbria we are called CCASS (Cumberland Chartered Accountant Students’ Society). We have a committee to represent ACA students training on either side of the Pennines.
