You probably know ICAEW as the professional body behind the ACA qualification. But did you know the story behind our logo, that the world's first female chartered accountant was an ICAEW member, and that you can even get married at Chartered Accountants Hall?

Here are five facts that might surprise you.

1. Meet Economia, ICAEW's “Institute Lady”

Economia is the woman at the heart of our identity.

She first appeared in a 1603 book of symbols by Italian writer Cesare Ripa, long before ICAEW was founded. When ICAEW received its coat of arms in 1881, Economia took centre stage, holding a rod representing authority, a rudder symbolising guidance and dividers representing accurate measurement.

Today, Economia still appears throughout Chartered Accountants' Hall in stained glass, stonework and artwork, and remains part of our logo. Her famous red dividers are a fitting symbol of what accountants do best: measure, assess and turn information into insight.

2. The world's first female chartered accountant was an ICAEW member

In 1887, Mary Harris Smith opened her own accountancy practice in London at a time when the profession was overwhelmingly male. In 1891, she applied to join ICAEW but was unable to do so because women were not yet eligible for membership.

Following the introduction of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919, women could finally enter the profession on the same terms as men. In 1920, at the age of 75, Mary became the world's first female chartered accountant.

She went on to support and train other women entering the profession. Today, her portrait hangs in Chartered Accountants' Hall as a reminder of her determination and lasting impact.

3. Chartered Accountants' Hall is also a licensed wedding venue

Chartered Accountants' Hall, our home since 1893, is one of London's most impressive buildings, but it's much more than our headquarters.

Located at One Moorgate Place in the City of London, the Grade II* listed building hosts conferences, awards ceremonies, corporate events and even weddings.
