ICAEW has conducted research into mid-tier practice firms, exploring the technology landscape, the solutions that firms are currently using, and areas that they see as opportunities and challenges for the future.

Given the significant changes in technology over the last decade, ICAEW partnered with independent market research firm Savanta to conduct fresh research in 2023 into the technology and software landscape that ICAEW members in mid-size practices are operating in.

Objectives included understanding where members see their practice on the digital journey, the different technology solutions currently in use and level of integration between applications in the technology stack, and any concerns or challenges around the use of technology, both now and in a horizon scan of the future.

The research approach included:

  • telephone and online surveys between 13 February and 5 April 2023;
  • senior decision makers, involved in decision to utilise specialised software at their practice;
  • 84 surveys completed across 35 distinct practices; and
  • a good mix by practice size, from 11 to 250 partners (excluding Big 6).
