Income tax self assessment tax returns
ICAEW’s Tax Faculty is publishing a series of “How to complete your tax return” articles to help with the preparation of 2024/25 income tax self assessment (ITSA) tax returns ahead of the 31 January 2026 filing deadline. The three articles published so far cover ITSA criteria, changes for low-income trusts and estates and tips for reporting capital gains and losses. Additional articles will be added to the series in the weeks to come and links to related content are provided.
Autumn Budget 2025
Tax return season will be interrupted by the Autumn Budget 2025 on 26 November 2025. The Tax Faculty will publish analysis of the key announcements and host a webinar in the days that follow. Visit ICAEW’s hub to read the latest news.
Prepare for MTD income tax
From April 2026, an estimated 840,000 sole traders and landlords will be required to comply with MTD income tax. The challenges for taxpayers of using software to keep digital records and to submit quarterly updates as well as an end of year return to HMRC should not be underestimated. ICAEW has published a wide range of content to help taxpayers and agents to prepare for MTD income tax, and will continue to do so.
Visit ICAEW’s MTD hub for:
- articles, such as the recent article on the exemption for the digitally excluded;
- in-depth guidance, including the popular and recently updated TAXguide 01/25; and
- recordings of webinars and podcasts. Highlights include the MTDtalk from June 2025.
Finance Bill 2025/26
ICAEW’s Fax Faculty recently responded to the government’s technical consultation on draft legislation for the Finance Bill 2025/26. The legislation, if enacted, will make significant changes to the tax system, including reforming inheritance tax and requiring agents to register with HMRC from April 2026. Learn more about the changes by reading the Tax Faculty's recent article or by listening to the latest episode of The Tax Track podcast.
