HMRC recommends that agents:
- Access HMRC’s online services for tax agents by going directly to GOV.UK, and not clicking on links in emails.
- Check to see if HMRC contact is genuine. Genuine HMRC emails will be sent from an email address that ends in gov.uk, for example:
- @hmrc.gov.uk;
- @tax.service.gov.uk;
- @advice.hmrc.gov.uk; and
- @updates.hmrc.gov.uk).
- Report suspicious contact to HMRC.
The hoax emails should not be confused with a letter from HMRC asking the agent to confirm who supervises them for AML regulation purposes. As explained in an earlier article, such letters are sent out periodically. It is important that the agent responds to genuine AML correspondence from HMRC as failure to do so could mean the agent losing access to HMRC services.
