Introduction
Although women had been members of ICAEW since 1920, it took another 41 years for a woman to be appointed to one of the ICAEW's standing committees. Margaret Hodge was the first, being on the Library Committee in 1965 and 1966.
By the mid 1980s there were several women on multiple committees and some newer committees, such as Information Techonology, had a women member from inception. The first women to sit on more than one committee at a time was Mary Yale in 1979. Yale was also the first women to Chair a committee - the Internal Services Committee in 1983.

Margaret Fox was a prominent woman accountant in the 1960s. Born in Greenwich in 1912, she registered for articles with Cyril Nathan of Howard Howes & Co at Norfolk House EC2 in 1946 and became an Associate of ICAEW in 1950 and a Fellow in 1956. She was with Howard Howes for all of her career, although it later became Howard, Tilly & Co (and later Baker Tilly).
However, she had already been an associate of the Society of Incorporated Accountants and Auditors since 1935 (and gained fellowship also in 1956). She was the second women to be on an ICAEW standing committee, representing the London Society of Chartered Accountants on the Technical Advisory Committee. Fox was also Secretary (1952-55) and later Chairman of the Womens Chartered Accountants' Dining Society (1959-60).
Fox was one of ten women representing the ICAEW at the 7th International Congress of Accountants held in Amsterdam in 1957, alongside other future WCADS chairmen Margaret Burgess, Vera Burton, Beryl Rainey and Margaret Smith. She was also the Accountancy profession's representative on the Inter-Professional Woman's Working Party, convened in 1966 to study 'the careers of qualified women with particular reference to the so-called wastage". One of the first aspects the working party looked at was position of the married women in relation to taxation.
She married Walter Meigh in 1972, at the age of 59, retired to Liss in Hampshire in 1977 and died in 1988 aged 75.

Today's picture
Although a direct comparison is not easy to make, as the number of committees and boards has vastly increased over the years and membership of committees is no longer publicly available. From the last list available to us it seems that there are around 289 different women on 62 committees and boards, including 16 chairs and 6 vice chairs. This does equate to roughly a third of all positions - female membership of the ICAEW is currently around 32%.
Notes
- Entries labelled 'Not an accountant?' means that the name could not be found in the List of Members, so is either not a qualified accountant, is an articled clerk or is also known by a different surname (i.e. maiden or married name).
- District Society Members of the Technical Committee ceased to be named by 1979.
- This information in the main comes from the ICAEW's List of Members, which was published until 2012. Committee membership is no longer publicly available.
