About the ICAEW Code of Ethics
All ICAEW members have a professional duty to comply with the Code of Ethics. They must familiarise themselves thoroughly with the current version of the Code which came into force 1 July 2025. Find out more about the Code and how to use it.

The ACA Approved Training Regulations, effective 1 July 2025, outline the requirements and conditions for approved training under the ICAEW. It includes definitions, training duration, conditions, part-time work, secondments, training records, and provisions for suspension and cancellation.
ACA Student Regulations

Effective from 1 July 2025. These regulations deal primarily with approved training, registration, applications for membership and credit for prior learning/experience. They apply to all ACA students.

The Assessment Regulations, effective 1 July 2025, outline the rules and guidelines for ICAEW assessments, including eligibility criteria, number of attempts allowed, syllabus module options, credit for prior learning, assessment entry, venues, remote invigilation, permitted items, access arrangements, misconduct policies, and result handling.
Audit Qualification Regulations

The Audit Qualification Regulations, effective 1 July 2025, outline the requirements for obtaining audit qualifications from ICAEW. It includes definitions, eligibility criteria, training requirements, and recognition of overseas qualifications. Members must complete specific training and work experience, pass ACA exams, and may need to meet additional criteria for overseas qualifications.
Audit Regulations and Guidance
Firms registered for audit with ICAEW are required to comply with the Audit Regulations and Guidance. Effective from 1 April 2017.

The DPB (Consumer Credit) Handbook sets out the regulations for firms to provide consumer credit services.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Regulations (superseded)
These regulations outline the ICAEW's CPD requirements on members and regulated individuals up to 31 October 2023.

Diploma charity accounting regulations
The requirements for candidates who wish to gain the Diploma in Charity accounting.
Disciplinary Bye-laws
The Disciplinary Bye-laws (DBLs) govern the way in which complaints are investigated by ICAEW’s Conduct Department (CD) and the procedures governing the Conduct, Tribunals, Appeal and Fitness to Practise Committees.
Documents and records
Guidance for members in practice on which documents the member owns; how long documents should be kept; if the client owns the documents, whether the member always has to hand them over; and the member's obligations to allow others access to documents.
DPB (Investment Business) Handbook
The DPB (Investment Business) Handbook sets out the regulations for firms licensed to provide DPB (Investment Business) activities.

Education and Training Appeal Regulations

The Education and Training Appeal Regulations, effective 1 July 2025, outline the procedures for appealing decisions made by the Education & Training Board of ICAEW. It defines key terms, the appointment of monitors, the notice of decisions, the right to appeal, the appeal panel's composition and responsibilities, and the conditions for further appeals and powers of variation.

Principal Bye-Laws

These principal bye-laws, which are consistent with the provisions of the Supplemental Charter, regulate ICAEW's affairs. Made under article 15 of the Supplemental Charter dated 21 December 1948. This version is effective from 1 November 2023.
Probate and Compensation Scheme Regulations
Firms accredited for probate by ICAEW are required to comply with these regulations.
Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII)
Professional indemnity insurance (PII) is compulsory for all ICAEW members who have a practising certificate and engage in public practice. PII is a requirement for a number of regulations.

Our Practice Assurance (PA) scheme provides ICAEW member firms and practising certificate holders with a framework of principles-based quality assurance standards to operate to. It outlines procedures to follow with your clients, and how to maintain the highest quality of work and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations, eg, those relating to anti-money laundering and protection of client data.
