- Edit notes in presentation mode in PowerPoint
- Group chats & shared projects to collaborate on Chat GPT
- Copy the style of one graphic to another in Canva
- Convert slides to a narrated video in Google Vids
New Microsoft app icons
Every three years or so, Microsoft would redo their icons typically, however since 2013 they’ve only refreshed them every six years, so icons have been unchanged since 2019 until this fresh batch:
Excel
Excel turned 40 this past quarter on 30 September, it’s incredible to think how much of an impact it has had. Microsoft publishes a digest every month which the author contributes to, here are articles for September, October and November 2025 and the image shows which features are in which channel (see below for how to check your channel).
New in Excel Desktop Current Channel
- New Get Data dialog box: Click Data tab > Get Data > Get Data (Preview) for a new interface to link your Excel via Power Query to other data sources. Microsoft have announced this is the first step in modernising the Windows Power Query experience, which will soon look like the Mac version, with new views and other new features.
- Analyse data moves to the Data tab: A new home for this feature that autogenerates charts and Pivot Tables without a Copilot license, or even ask a question about your data. More in these videos:
New in Excel Current Channel for Copilot subscribers (paying an additional $20-30 per month)
- Formula by example: Start writing a formula output in an adjacent column and by the second entry, Excel will sometimes suggest a formula for you. This works best using Excel Tables but also in regular ranges. It can do things like:
- Text transformations include:
- Removing whitespace
- First/last name (i.e. every character before/after the space)
- Initials
- Date transformations include different date formats
- Round numbers or add them together across columns
- Number the rows 1, 2, 3 etc.
This documentation claims it works in the above instances, but I have not always been successful, and since there’s no button to manually trigger it, its not always so smooth. This video explains more:
Word Current channel
- Apply ink to shape as you draw.: Draw tab > Ink to Shape can be selected before drawing a shape and Word will convert everything as you draw before deselecting it, previously it could be applied afterwards only.
PowerPoint Current channel
- Edit notes in presenter view: Add or edit notes once you’re already in slideshow mode as long as you are in presentation view. This can be accessed in two ways:
- When you’re connected to another screen, go to Slideshow > Tick presenter view
- Press Alt F10: Note this method works when you’re only on one screen
Microsoft 365 Core Office Apps channels and Copilot versions explained
Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook and Word release regular updates to Microsoft 365. To see or update your version, click File> Account. The Current Channel should now be on version 2510, which is the year 2025 and month 10 (October) which is lagging behind as 2512 (December) should be released later this month, the Monthly Enterprise channel releases updates a couple of months after the Current Channel. The Semi-Annual Channel released an update in July 2025 up to version 2502 but none since. The Insider or Beta features are only available for a small selection of people who sign up to help test features, so they haven’t been reported explicitly, but they give a good idea of what is coming next. Frontier is a new tier that gets Copilot/AI features ahead of others.
Microsoft 365 has three license tiers for Copilot:

Archive and Knowledge Base
This archive of Excel Community content from the ION platform will allow you to read the content of the articles but the functionality on the pages is limited. The ION search box, tags and navigation buttons on the archived pages will not work. Pages will load more slowly than a live website. You may be able to follow links to other articles but if this does not work, please return to the archive search. You can also search our Knowledge Base for access to all articles, new and archived, organised by topic.
