In an ever-evolving economic, regulatory and technological landscape, finance practitioners must keep abreast of a wide range of topics. ICAEW produces regular podcasts offering easy updates with expert analysis and practical assessments of the key issues affecting the profession and the wider economy.
The Accountancy Insights podcast series brings together panels of experts to discuss the latest headlines from the world of business, finance and accountancy in 30 minutes. Recent editions have covered:
- The UK government’s Industrial Strategy and what it means for accountants, and what you need to know about VAT reform.
- How SMEs can pursue growth amid economic uncertainty and how auditors should exercise professional judgement.
- Revisions to ICAEW’s Code of Ethics and new government measures to collect unpaid taxes.
- Changes to UK GAAP (FRS 102 and 105) and the impact of US trade tariffs.
Deeper dives into major business issues are provided through our Behind the Numbers episodes. In June, risk analyst and author Charles Hecker discussed how businesses could navigate investment risk, outlining the lessons that could be learned from Russia’s recent history and the strategies businesses can put in place to move quickly when risks occur.
Our 100th podcast – which you can also watch – went live in May and brought together experts from across business, politics and technology to look at a fundamental problem that’s holding back economic growth: trust. Hear from ICAEW CEO Alan Vallance and Baroness Margaret Ford, Chair, The Centre for Public Interest Audit, on the trust crisis in business and institutions and how it can possibly be rebuilt as economic volatility persists.
Popular episodes from the back catalogue include: “A ticking tech skills timebomb”, where experienced practitioners and trainers talk through the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the accountancy profession on skills. Hear advice on how firms can identify their training needs and the best ways to deliver support.
Tax Track
Following the success of ICAEW’s accountancy podcasts, the institute launched Tax Track in 2024. Each month, experts from ICAEW’s Tax Faculty share their insights and analysis of the latest developments in tax practice, policy and regulation.
Recently the team got behind the headlines of one of the biggest changes in UK tax for years, the replacement of the long-standing rules for UK resident, non-UK domiciled individuals (non-doms). Hear expert analysis of the new foreign income and gains regime, including its pros and cons.
This month, the podcast focuses on how income tax and capital gains tax (CGT) can be paid outside of the self-assessment regime. Find out what simple assessments are and how real-time reporting for CGT works, including the potential problem areas.
Episodes this year have discussed how taxpayers and agents can prepare for the requirements of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, how to navigate the revamped regime governing research and development tax relief and how to support clients to understand their tax obligations relating to cryptoassets.
