Liverpool Society members and articled clerks killed in WW2

This page pays tribute to the men of the Liverpool Society of Chartered Accountants who are remembered on the memorial on display at The Church of Our Lady and St Nicholas in Liverpool

Please note that the memorials can only be viewed when a service is in progress at Our Lady and St Nicholas. The memorials are in the stairwell to the right of the entrance hall. Although the church can be visited at other times, the door to stairwell is normally locked.

Flying Officer Kenneth Stanley Booth

16 Squadron, Army Co-operation Command RAF. Transferred from Royal Artillery (Lieutenant) in November 1940. 

Killed on active service 22 February 1945. Commemorated at Plymouth City Crematorium.

Killed whilst flying Westland Lysander LIIa. Collided With Hurricane Be586 of 247 Sqn At Race Marsh, Totnes, Devon, during a dummy attack while on an Army Co-Op exercise.


Born 20 November 1914. Educated at Wallasey School (passed prelim. exam in Nov 1935). Articled with Eric Shaw FCA of Simon Jude & West, 11-13 Victoria Street

Temporary Acting Sub-Lieutenant Neil Buchanan

Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, HMS Janus.

Killed in action 23 January 1944. Commemorated at Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

HMS Janus, a J-Class destroyer was sunk by Fritz X guided bomb dropped by a Heinkel 111 bomber off the Anzio beachhead in Italy.


Born 16 September 1923. Articled with George Kenneth Cook FCA of Harmood, Banner-Banner & Son, 24 North John Street.

Flight Sergeant (Air Gunner) Oliver Alexander Meredith Cook

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. 30 Squadron RAF Bomber Command.

Killed in action 22 November 1944. Buried in Budapest War Cemetery, Hungary. 

Vickers Wellington X LP-732 was shot down during an air raid on railway marshalling yards in Szombathely, Hungary.


Born 19 August 1924. Articled with Frederick Cook of Blease & Sons, 83 Cotton Exchange Buildings.

Possibly related to Frederick Cook.

Squadron Leader Charles Henry Duringer

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, 83 Group RAF.

Died on active service 30 December 1945. Buried in Becklingen War Cemetery, Germany.

Collapsed and died, whilst about to board a ship at Cuxhaven, of a cerebral haemorrhage.


Fellow of the ICAEW 1936, ACA 1928. Thornton, Walker, Wallis and Duringer, 54 Castle Street (LoM 1940).

2nd Lieutenant George Wood Gunn V.C. M.C.

A Troop, J Bty., 3rd Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery

Killed in action 21 November 1941. Buried in Knightsbridge Cemetery, Acroma, Libya

Died during the battle at Sidi Rezegh airfield.


Educated at Mostyn House and Sedburgh Schools. Articled with Stanley Howard Bersey OBE, FCA of Sissons, Bersey, Gain, Vincent & Co., London and became an ACA in 1938. C/O Soho Ltd, 23 Soho Square not in practice (1940 LoM).

Gunn's brother Major Philip Maclean Gunn M.C. of the Royal Army Medical Corps and the SAS also served and died in WW2. Their two other brothers Major Ridley Gunn (Royal Artillery) and Lieut. Donald Gunn (RAMC) also served.

Bombardier James Kenneth Harrison

149th (The Lancashire Yeomanry) Anti-Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery.

Killed in action 29 November 1941, Buried in Knightsbridge Military cemetery, Acroma, Libya.


Born 27 April 1917. Articled with Robert Orr McIlwrick of Peter Gregson, Chaplin & Co., 42 King Street West Manchester. Associate of the ICAEW, 1939. With Peter Gregson, Chaplin & Co. (LoM 1940).

We believe that Harrison was born and educated in Liverpool.

Temp. Lieutenant Iorwerth Brian Evan Humphrey

Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, HM Trawler Birdlip.

Died of wounds 14 June 1944. Commemorated at Lowestoft Naval Memorial.

HMT Birdlip was sunk by U-457 off the coast of Liberia on 14 June 1944.

Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (Royal Naval Air Service). HMS Vulture (RNAS St. Merryn)

Killed on active service 27 June 1943. Buried in St Merryn churchyard, Cornwall.

Killed while flying (Sea Hurricane IIc NF716). Collided With Spitfire R6887 of 748 Sqn and Crashed At Trevillador, St Ervan 2 Miles South of St Merryn, Cornwall.


Born 8 September 1922. Articled with Hubert William Burrell FCA  of Mitchell & Bunting, 22 Lord Street.

Captain David Vickery Leighton

371 Bty., 98th (The Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry) Field Regt. Royal Artillery

Killed in action 23 January 1944, Buried in Minturno War Cemetery, Italy

Died crossing the River Garigliano during the advance towards Rome.

Ordinary Seamen Andrew Norman Lewis

Royal Navy, HMS Barham.

Killed in action  26 November 1941. Commemorated at Chatham Naval Memorial.

HMS Barham was sunk off the coat of Egypt by U-331.


Born 19 March 1913.  Articled with Walter Ward Platt (died 1938) and Geoffrey Ward Platt of  W. Ward Platt & Co., Bank Chambers, 3 Cook Street.

Lieutenant Arthur Edward Mounsey

106th (The Lancashire Hussars) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery (TA).

Killed in action 1 June 1944. Commemorated at the Athens Memorial.

Most likely died in the battle of Crete.


Articled with Henry Parkinson Mounsey of Lewis & Mounsey.

Son of Henry Parkinson Mounsey FCA and brother of Harry Mounsey ACA.

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. 12 Squadron RAF Bomber Command.

Killed in action 5 May 1944. Buried in Courtiols (St Memmie) Churchyard, France.

Killed when Avro Lancaster III JB748 was shot down over St-Memmie, France.

Lieutenant Ernest Francis Pegg

Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. HM Trawler Minicoy

Killed in action 14 May 1941. Commemorated at the Lowestoft Memorial.

HMT Minicoy was sunk by a mine in the Bristol Channel.

Pilot Officer John Montague Phillips

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. 61 Squadron, RAF Bomber Command.

Killed in action 29 July 1943. Buried in Kiel War Cemetery, Germany.

Avro Lancaster III ED782 was shot down by a night fighter and crashed into the North Sea near Heligoland.

Leading Aircraftman George Freeman Pratt

1 Air Observer & Navigator School, Flying Training Command. RAF Prestwich, Ayr.

Killed on active service 28 January 1941. Buried in Waverton St Peter's, Cheshire.

Killed whilst flying. Avro Anson I N4939 flew into high ground, one mile north of Goat Fell on the Isle of Arran, in bad weather during a night navigation exercise.


Born 9 June 1921. Educated at King's School, Chester. Articled with Reginald John Stockton of Haswell & Stockton, 94 Foregate Street, Chester.

Short Stirling III BK770 crashed on return journey at Valley Farm Bressingham 3 miles WNW of Diss, Norfolk.

Died in the defence of Singapore.

Died of wounds 18 February 1944. Commemorated at Cassino Cemetery, Italy.

Likely wounded at the battle of Monte Cassino.
