Ongoing research

The next step for this research will be a visit to the London Archive to consult the ICAEW's Register of Articles. From this source we can establish forenames for the people we only know by initials and who they served articles with. Once we have full names we may be able to connect these names with military records. We also welcome any help from members of the public in identifying the men on this page.

Notes

  1. John Audley Parle: Award of the Military Cross gazetted in 14 September 1917: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a raiding party. As they were about to return he found one of his officers lying unconscious on the enemy wire. He took him on his back and carried him 250 yards to our lines, through heavy enemy barrage and machine-gun fire."
  2. Laurence Prendeville: The Liverpool Irish is the 8th Bn., not the 7th Bn. Prendeville's picture clearly displays the collar badge of the Liverpool Irish. His death notice in the Birkenhead News states that he was 8th Bn. attd. 18th Bn.
  3. J.M.S. Coates: The biography of Coates, A Man of Trust, mentions his friendship with both Oswald Tempest and Archibald Lockett.
  4. Edward William Crawford: Award of bar to the Distinguished Service Order gazetted 1 Jan 1918: "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a week's heavy fighting he did fine work. He twice led successful counter-attacks, and repeatedly rallied his men and took up defensive positions."
  5. Richard Percival Heywood: Award of the Military Cross, gazetted 10 January 1917: "For conspicuous gallantry in action. He assumed command of and led his company forward on three separate occasions. On the same occasion he marked out under fire the assembly position for the battalion."
Award of the 2nd bar to the Military Cross, gazetted 13 January 1919: "When all the other company commanders had become casualties during severe fighting lasting for several days he displayed the greatest courage and skill in leading the attack, which resulted in the capture of a position. His conduct throughout the whole operations was of the highest order and a splendid example to all ranks".
  6. Reginald Frederick Frazer: On the memorial Frazer is misspelt as Fraser.
  7. Henry Parkinson Mounsey is the father of Arthur Mounsey, who died in WW2, Harry Mounsey who was a prisoner of war in WW2 and is the grandfather of Jonathan Mounsey. a former President of the LSCA.
  8. Allister Sommerfeld was a Prisoner of War in both World Wars. See our page on WW2 prisoners of war for more details. He is one of only two ICAEW men we are currently aware of who were a PoW in WW1, the other was Alfred Herring V.C.
  9. Douglas Milroy and Roy Milroy: It is quite likely that they were related as they lived opposite each other in Alexandra Drive, Aintree. The father of Douglas was a shipbroker, while Roy's father was a Secretary to a steamship company (1914 census)
