Honorary member

Emanuel Van Dien, crediting with introducing the accountancy profession to the Netherlands in 1893 and former Chairman of the Dutch Accountants Association, was made an Honorary member of the SIAA in 1926. He was also a member of the Government Commission for the Regulation of the Accounting Industry, a founder of many charitable organisations and the Vice-chairman of the council of the Dutch Israelite main synagogue.

He went into hiding in Balricum, occupied Holland, with his wife, one of his daughters and his partners from his firm Van Dies, van Uden & Co.. He died on 23 March 1943. The owners of the house (the Gerrits) and the remainder of those still in hiding were betrayed and arrested on 9 January 1944. They were sent to concentration camps including Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen where they were all murdered. Two of his four daughters survived.

Emanuel van Dien (1865-1943) is buried in Muiderberg, North Holland.

Notes and glossary

After World War One, the SIAA published an 'In Memoriam' page in the List of Members, that listed members, articled clerked and bye-law candidates who had died serving their country. They did not do this after World War Two, so the only source for this information is those deaths that were published in Accountancy.

It is highly likely that many of the names of articled clerks and bye-law candidates who died were not reported in Accountancy. If SIAA clerks died at the same rate as those of the ICAEW then there would be at least 30 more names on the list.

  1. Cowley relinquished his commission on medical unfitness grounds In March 1945 and died later that year.
  2. Jackson was on his way from Brazil to enlist with the armed forces
  3. Jakeman served a Lieutenant in the Household Artillery Company and Machine Gun Corps in WW1
  4. Pennington was a Sergeant in the Manchester Regiment, was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment before transferring to the Pioneer Corps in WW1. He was awarded the Silver War Badge for the injuries he received. His OBE was warded for 'services to Gibraltar' where he was Secretary, Treasurer and Accountant to the City of Gibraltar.
  5. Platel's George Medal was one of only two awarded to the combined ICAEW/SIAA membership.
