Have a question about the ICAEW Vice President Elections process? Below are the answers to the questions we get asked the most about applying to the ICAEW Vice President process.
  • Am I eligible to participate in the elections?

All Council members are eligible for election to the office of Vice-President.

A full list of Council members will be published with the nomination materials.

Details of the arrangements for the election will be circulated each year, together with an invitation (by means of a nomination form) to those who are eligible and wish to stand to seek nominations.

No Council member may nominate more than one candidate. Members of the Governance and Appointments Committee who are members of Council may not nominate a candidate in their capacity as an individual member of Council.

  • I want to stand for Vice President - How do I apply?
    • Submit a candidate statement to governanceoffice@icaew.com
    • Your candidate statement will be reviewed to check eligibility. Usually this is confirmed within 2 working days.
    • Once you are confirmed as a provisional candidate, you must find eight ICEAW members to nominate you. Nominators do this via sending an email to governanceoffice@icaew.com
    • Your candidate statement and eight nominations must be received by Noon BST 24 October 2024.

  • What happens next?
    • By 31 October 2024 – Returning Officer Committee review of nominations
    • 14 November 2024 – Announcement of election result if uncontested
    • 14 November 2024 – Inform contested candidates of ballot
    • 14 November 2024 – Issue of voting papers for contested elections
    • 19 November 2024 – Candidate Husting event (virtual)
    • 28 November 2024 (12 Noon GMT) – Closing date for receipt of voting papers
    • 10 December 2024 – Formal announcement of election results

  • How do I complete my candidate application?

You can complete your application by sending the candidate statement to governanceoffice@icaew.com from 18 September 2024.

  • What should I include in the candidate statement?

All candidates must submit a candidate statement in the standard template made available. You are advised to complete all sections of the template. If you leave a section blank, it will appear as such in your final statement. There is a word limit of 300 words maximum for the personal statement.

  • What's the candidate vetting process?

When we receive a candidate's application the Governance Office reviews it to make sure it's been completed. This is then followed by an internal disciplinary check and an external background check to confirm eligibility.

Subject to these stages being completed satisfactorily, a candidate's application becomes a Provisional Candidate. The candidate will be notified of this, and nominators will be able to nominate the candidate through the governanceoffice@icaew.com

The Returning Officer Committee will meet after the closure of the Nominations Process and will review each candidacy.

The returning officer must not accept any nomination which:

    • is incomplete or which is received after the deadline for nominations; or is not made by a Council member
    • in the opinion of the Returning Officer Committee, represents a potential for conflict of interest to the extent that, in managing this conflict, the member may be unable to fulfil the role of Vice President to the standard that would be reasonably expected by the members. For further information on conflicts of interest, please review the 'Declaration of Interest Policy'.

  • How do I know if I am approved as a candidate?

The Governance Office will check all nominations to ensure candidates are eligible to stand. Disciplinary and background checks will be conducted to ensure there are no adverse findings in the last 10 years that might disqualify the member from taking up the role of Vice President.

Once this check is complete, the candidate will be deemed to be a Provisional Candidate.

Your candidacy will be confirmed in full once the Returning Officer Committee have reviewed and approved your application in full. We will email you to confirm that you are an Approved Candidate.

  • What's the nominating process?

Candidates need eight nominators. The nominators must be full ICAEW members and cannot be a member of the GAC committee. Nominators register their support by sending the nomination form to governanceoffice@icaew.com. The Governance Office will let candidates know when this stage is completed. The deadline for nominations is Noon UK-time 24 October 2024.

  • Does a Candidate need to email their statement to the Governance Office before Council Members can email Nomination Forms in support of the candidate?

There is no order in which we need to receive these forms. In previous elections the online nomination portal required submission of a candidate’s statement first. This was an administrative rather than a procedural requirement.

  • How will a candidate know when they’ve received their eight nominations?

The Governance Office will email candidates to let them know.  We will acknowledge receipt of nomination forms and let a Council Member know if the nomination is surplus to the eight required per candidate.

  • Why aren’t you using the online nomination site?
The online nomination site can only handle one election at a time. Since another election was already in progress, we had to run the Vice President Election nominations through governanceoffice@icaew.com. However, the voting process will still be conducted via an online voting site.
  • When is the deadline for sending my application?

The completed application should be received by the Governance Office by 12 noon BST on 24 October 2024.

  • What are the rules for campaigning?

All rules and guidance can be found in the Council Election Regulations.

  • When does voting open?

If the election goes to ballot, voting will open at 12 Noon GMT on 14 November 2024. Members eligible to vote will receive a voting email.

  • How do members vote?

You will be able to vote online from 12 Noon GMT on 14 November to 12 Noon GMT on 28 November 2024.

  • When does voting close?

Voting closes at 12 (noon) GMT on 28 November 2024.

  • How long after voting closes will I know if I have been successful?

ICAEW will confirm results of the election to candidates by email. Results will also be published on ICAEW.com/councilelections on 10 December 2024.
