Highlights from the broader tax news for the week ending 19 July 2023, including: downloadable CGT PPD return trial extended; updated VAT form for barristers and advocates; and increase in apprenticeship care leavers’ bursary.

CGT on UK property paper return trial extended

HMRC has extended a trial allowing taxpayers to download a paper version of the capital gains tax on UK property (CGT PPD) return. The 2023/24 CGT PPD return will remain available to download until the end of September 2023 while HMRC reviews its usage and effectiveness.

Most taxpayers must submit a CGT PPD return through HMRC’s online service. However, some people are unable to submit online; they can instead submit a paper return. This includes digitally excluded taxpayers and those with circumstances listed in HMRC’s Capital Gains Manual.

VAT811 form updated for barristers and advocates

Barristers and advocates who have ceased to practice can apply to defer payment of the VAT due on outstanding professional fees. To do so, form VAT811 should be submitted to HMRC’s GABS team. The form was updated on 17 July 2023 to reflect updated legislation. For more information, please see VAT Notice 700/44.

Reminder: Apprenticeship care leavers' bursary increase

The apprenticeship care leavers’ bursary payment increases from £1,000 to £3,000 for new starters from 1 August 2023. Further details can be found in Employer Bulletin - June 2023.
