Chair’s opening remarks

Keynote: From code to clinic: The life science vision in action
Dr Rebecca Pope (she/her), Clinical Neuroscientist and Roche UK's Digital & Data Science Innovation Lead, will cover the motivations and key learnings: working towards the strategic aims of the Life Sciences Industrial Strategy; delivering value to UK society and patients through better use of routine data; use of digital tools, including artificial intelligence.
HMRC update: McCloud Remedy & IR35
During this session HMRC will discuss the latest on Basis Period Reform, IR35 and McCloud Portal access. Delegates are encouraged to submit their questions in advance for discussion during this session.
Update on Basis Period Reform in the medical sector
Hear from Deborah Wood, Partner at MHA Moore and Smalley on the topic of basis period reform as it relates to GP practice partnerships and how that interacts with the calculation of NHS pensionable earnings in the 2023-24 transition year.
Primary Care Support England
Katrina Venerus from Primary Care Support England (PCSE) will provide an update from PCSE on the administration of GP Pensions and will also cover questions on key processes submitted by attendees.
Legal update: Contracts
Hear from Oliver Pool, Partner at Veale Wasbrough Vizards LLP, in conversation with Sally Sidaway, Medical Director at Morris Crocker. They will discuss a range of contracts topics such as the latest position on PCNs, PCN incorporation and PCN disputes, structuring of Mergers, goodwill and SDLT, the declaration of earnings and GP partnership disputes.
Why are GPs revolting?
General Practitioner, Dr Kieran Sharrock, will discuss the current state of general practice workload, finance, and workforce, and why this is forcing GPs to take action.


Lunch break
Contractual update and PCNs
James Gransby, Partner at Azets, will provide an update on the GP contract for the coming year including the effect of this on PCNs. The session will look at what is topical presently in this area and some ideas on what the future may bring and the effect this may have on our GP clients.
Current issues facing Pharmacies in 2024
In this session, Jonathan Broad and Christopher Vowels from Christie & Co will discuss the key issues affecting pharmacies.

Katie Collin
Katie Collin Partner, Ramsay Brown and Chair, ICAEW Healthcare Community

Katie is a Partner at Ramsay Brown, dealing with technical accounting and superannuation issues, and specialising in corporate matters within the medical sector. She also focuses on financial issues surrounding PCNs, including VAT, financial governance and liability management. Katie was selected as the leading accountant under 30 to represent the Institute internationally at One Young World in 2016.

Sally Sidaway
Sally Sidaway Medical Director, Morris Crocker

Sally is a Medical Director at Morris Crocker specialist medical accountants with over 26 years’ experience in acting for GP's and the wider medical client base. Sally has acted for a large number of GP practices across the South of England of a range of size, type and structure. Sally regularly deals with the affairs of PCN’s and client mergers together with the tax aspects of client’s affairs including exposure to NHS pension tax charges.

As a founding member of Christie & Co’s UK-wide pharmacy team, Jonathan has been instrumental in the sale of some of the leading pharmacy businesses and high-profile disposal projects in recent years.

Ian Crompton Managing Director, PrimaryCare Finance Consultancy

Ian's background is with Lloyds Bank. He established their award winning HealthCare team in 2024, and was the banks Head of HealthCare until he retired in 2019. He now works as an independent consultant and broker, mainly supporting GP practices with surgery finance.

Graham Crossley
Graham Crossley Director, Medifintech

Graham is a widely acknowledged industry expert on NHS pensions. He is the founder of Medifintech.co.uk, who provide NHS pension support for members, Financial Advisers and Accountants. He is a regular commentator on NHS pension issues in the National and Trade Press, as well as appearing on TV. He has successfully lobbied government for changes to benefit NHS pension members, as well as providing technical expertise to Unions and other organisations.

James has worked in the sector for over two decades and holds the role of Vice Chair of The Association of Independent Specialist Medical Accountants, whose members act for almost half of all GPs in the country. James spends his time working with doctors and GP practices and writes for national publications on topical matters affecting GPs.

Huw Padgett
Huw Padgett Business Services Director, MHA

Huw joined MHA (formerly HJE) in January 2008. Since joining the firm, he has gained experience and specialist knowledge of accountancy and taxation within the healthcare sector and works closely with GP clients and GP Partnership’s. Huw also has specific experience dealing with the NHS Pension, VAT for dispensing practices, cashflow and drawings projections, and various accountancy packages.

Oliver Pool
Oliver Pool Partner, Veale Wasbrough Vizards LLP

Oliver has been acting for GPs practices since 2005 and has been involved in drawing up or amending well over 500 GP partnership deeds. He advises GP practices and helps with all aspects of the partnership relationship, from putting in place the GP partnership deed, to advising on its terms, to dealing with disputes between partners. He also routinely advises on GP mergers and the creation of super partnerships and other new structures for GP practices.

Rebecca Pope
Dr Rebecca Pope Clinical Neuroscientist & Roche UK's Digital & Data Science Innovation Lead

Dr Rebecca Pope (she/her) is a Clinical Neuroscientist & Roche UK's Digital & Data Science Innovation Lead. Rebecca co-leads the Roche & Great Ormond Street Hospital partnership and focuses on co-developing scalable digital health solutions across the patient pathway. She is also an honorary PhD supervisor & researcher at UCL in artificial intelligence.

Kieran Sharrock
Dr Kieran Sharrock General Practitioner, Lincolnshire

Kieran has been a GP in Lincolnshire since 2001 and has been politically active since the advent of the 2004 GP contract change. Kieran has been a member of Lincolnshire Local Medical Committee for nearly 20 years and was its medical director for ten years. He has been the locality representative to BMA GP Committee for Lincolnshire, Humberside, and East Yorkshire for the last five years, and was acting Chair of the Committee for 18 months, negotiating with government to improve the GP contract. Kieran is currently establishing East Lincolnshire’s first private GP practice.

Katrina is the Primary Care Support England Senior Manager who has responsibility for GP Pensions quality and service improvements. She works closely with NHS England and NHS Pensions on the joint improvement programme for GP Pensions and has regular engagement with the BMA, ICBs, LMCs and other GP Pensions key stakeholders.

Christopher Vowles Head of Valuation – Medical, Christie & Co

Chris joined Christie & Co in 2008, was appointed Director in 2010 and in July 2017 was appointed Head of Valuation - Medical. Chris has overall responsibility for valuation work undertaken across our medical business with particular expertise in the GP, pharmacy and dental sectors. With a client base of leading corporate and independent operators together with key banks and lending institutions, Chris has been integrally involved in all of Christie & Co’s major medical advisory instructions since joining the business and is frequently invited to speak at industry events and conferences.

Deborah Wood Partner, MHA

Debbie is a specialist healthcare services partner with MHA. She is Chairman of The Association of Independent Specialist Medical Accountants (AISMA) and a former President of the North West Society of Chartered Accountants. Debbie has specialised in looking after Healthcare Professional clients for over twenty-five years and is invited to speak at seminars across the country to doctors, their practice managers and fellow accountants on a wide variety of financial management topics affecting the sector.
