Council is the governing body of ICAEW and is comprised of around 90 members of which the majority are elected. 37 seats on Council will be available in the next elections for the Council term starting in June 2023.

The ICAEW Council has overall control of the direction of ICAEW, sets policy and strategy and decides major items such as subscriptions. Matters are wide ranging and have recently covered the changing role of the accountant, education and training, government reform of audit and corporate governance, our response to the climate agenda and the Ukraine amongst others.

Council meets normally four times a year using a hybrid format together with a two day away day during the summer. Day-to-day management is delegated to the Board, which is appointed by Council, and the ICAEW’s staff.

Council members are elected for a four year term but many choose to re-stand for another term if their own commitments so allow. Elections take place every two years.

Members in business are proportionately under-represented on Council at present, but, forming over 50% of the membership of ICAEW, your views are hugely important to the future of the profession.

The world is changing rapidly and, if working out where we should place ourselves for the future and helping to guiding us there appeals, do please consider standing for Council. Your input would be very welcome. Nominations open on 2 November 2022.
