Why NFL?

The Network of Finance Leaders (NFL) programme is a practical learning programme that develops the leadership capability of participants through a blend of one-to-one expert mentoring, peer learning groups and experiential workshops. All designed to deliver evidence of the participant’s progress and adding value within their organisation.

NFL is designed to accentuate the difference between management and leadership, and accelerate the influence and commercial effectiveness of ambitious first line managers and experienced senior managers aiming to progress into strategic leadership roles. Research shows that mid-level managers are key to business performance, but are often overwhelmed by the details of its day to day execution. NFL focuses on providing managers with the insight to deliver far more easily the everyday results expected of them, while also developing a strategic mind-set and leadership style to influence across their organisation.

The NFL Journey

NFL is an accelerated learning journey with a blended approach. It consists of experiential exercises, scenario learning and reflective exercises. Each workshop focuses on a different aspect of leadership. Augment your skills through intensive discussions, interactive peer learning groups and simulations -guided by expert facilitators, and gain immediately applicable insights.

NFL is a journey of self-discovery, creating powerful shifts in mindset that impact all aspects of work and life.

What's involved

Mentoring and coaching x 4 (1.5 hours per session)

These are focused sessions where participants share their learning, and gain from the insightful experience of a senior leader or an expert coach, to accelerate their individual development.

Networking events x 2 (evening)

Some of the most successful leaders in UK business share their personal journey and the reality of leading an organization from a senior strategic role. Previous speakers have included Philip Vincent, CFO of BBC Worldwide and Tom Athron, FD of Waitrose.

Leadership and commercial skills workshops x 4 (1 day)

Practical workshops designed to identify the strategic skills that increase influence and effectiveness, and overcome the known ‘critical incidents’ that can stall the transition from manager to leader.

Peer learning groups x 4 (half day)

Participants work with a facilitator in small groups to apply the learning from the workshops to their individual leadership challenges and develop practical solutions with the mutual support of their peers. Delegates learn that their leadership challenges are not just unique to them, and identify the leadership skills that work across a diverse spectrum of roles and industries.

Case Study

Bruna Nikolla, CACI

Eight years ago, Bruna Nikolla was accounts assistant at CACI, “helping the finance department with the accountancy side”, she says. Today, she is head of finance and operations and part of the company’s executive management team.

“When I came to this position, I knew I would have to motivate my team and look after planning and managing, all things I’d never done before. I was looking for some training to help me progress.” Nikolla found ICAEW’s Network of Finance Leaders course, a strategic leadership programme for ambitious managers aspiring to FD or similar roles.

“It was such a great experience,” she says. “There are many skills you learn, which are not tangible. Back at work, it was as though the course switched on something in my brain and I began to see things differently and think: ‘I can do this’. It’s not something you learn from a book; you learn things without even realising you are learning them. You become braver, more relaxed, more open minded, you understand other people’s views better.

“I used to get so stressed. I was getting bogged down with all this admin because I wasn’t trusting my team to learn from their mistakes and get things done,” Nikolla says. “Now, I’m properly managing; I delegate everything. My staff are valued, they feel more important, I make them part of the decisions. 
I have a completely different mindset. I wouldn’t be able to do my job without doing that course.”
