guide to library services

Who can use the Library & Information Service?

In addition to our public online guides and catalogue, ICAEW members and ACA students, members of certain other accountancy bodies and non-members can use the library and other dedicated subject resources. Please read on for more detailed guidance on any limits that may apply.

ICAEW members and ACA students

ICAEW members and ACA students of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW) automatically have access to a wealth of online resources via our website and can use all of the library's services.

CIPFA members and students

Members and students of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) wherever they are located are able to use the Business Centre and physical Library space in London and can use our book loan and document supply service. Access to the service for CIPFA users excludes electronic resources and eBooks owing to the terms of our license agreements. This exclusion also applies to the databases accessible on the library computers in London.

Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) and Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI) members

Members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS) and Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI), wherever they are located, are also able to use the library. This includes the enquiry service, book loans and document supply service but excludes access to online resources that are behind the member login.

IFA/FTA members and students

The arrangement to provide services to IFA members ceased on 30 April 2014. Please contact the IFA if you have any queries.

IFA members can consult the ICAEW Library collection in person on an ad hoc basis under the same terms as non-members.

Members of GAA Institutes based in the UK

Members of the GAA Institutes based in the UK can use our book loan and document delivery services.

The GAA Institutes are:

  • American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA)
  • Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada)
  • Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI)
  • Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA)
  • Institut der Wirtschaftsprüfer (IDW)
  • Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand
  • Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland (ICAS)
  • Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants (JICPA)
  • South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA)

To use our services, GAA Institutes members must be based in the UK and provide proof of identity and membership of their Institute (for example, their membership card).

Due to licensing agreements there may be some restrictions on GAA Institutes members using electronic resources.

Non-members

Non-members have access to a range of resources free of charge via our website, including the library catalogue, and may use our document delivery service. In addition, non-members can visit the library by providing a letter of introduction from a current ICAEW member, by payment of a fee or by special permission. We recommend that you contact the library ahead of your visit to ensure that the materials you need to consult are available.

Letter of introduction

Please refer to the guidance for non-members and sponsors:

Payment of fee

If you cannot obtain a letter of introduction and you have a valid need to visit the library for research, you can pay a daily or weekly fee, currently set at £15+VAT per day and £50+VAT for the week. Payment must be made in advance of your visit by electronic transfer. For further information please email us at library@icaew.com.

Please note that undergraduate students are not able to visit the library under this arrangement.

Special permission

If you feel that there are exceptional circumstances applying to your need to use the library you should contact the Enquiry Services Manager at library@icaew.com in advance of your visit. Each application is considered individually.
