John Selwood’s Question Corner

John Selwood considers some big issues affecting all auditors and audits.

In my opinion, the need for professional scepticism continues to be the most important issue in auditing today. You are absolutely correct that the findings of monitoring visits are increasingly focused on this. A suggested or proven lack of scepticism can be very serious for an auditor.

So, ensuring that professional scepticism is always properly applied continues to be one of the biggest challenges facing auditors. There are no quick fixes, and a brief Q&A in Audit & Beyond does not allow the scope to address the entire issue. Even so, I will make one observation that, it seems to me, is not always taken into account.
